FAQs
How does Mule City ensure that your goat and sheep feeds stay consistent and safe for sensitive animals?
At Mule City Specialty Feeds, we know how important consistency and quality are—especially when you’re feeding animals with sensitive digestion, reproductive demands, or mineral tolerances.
That’s why we oversee every step of our feed production in-house at our mill in Benson, North Carolina.
From ingredient selection to final bagging, our team uses reliable, high-quality ingredients chosen for their performance—not just their price. Whether you’re feeding Goat Feed, Maximum Goat Feed, Sheep Feed, or Show Lamb Feed, the goal is always the same: provide a feed that supports steady growth, healthy rumen function, and mineral balance across all stages of production.
Our rations include:
- Proven fiber sources like soybean hulls and cottonseed hulls
- Highly digestible energy from molasses and vegetable oils
- Chelated trace minerals for better absorption and immune support
- No ionophores—keeping every blend safe for goats and sheep
We don’t rely on commodity brokers or outsourced mixing, which means you get a more stable feed with less batch-to-batch variation. That’s especially critical for breeders, show animals, or mixed herds where even small changes can cause setbacks.

Are your goat feeds safe for mixed herds that include sheep, or do they contain copper levels too high for sheep?
Mule City’s goat feeds are not safe for sheep. Products like Goat Feed and Maximum Goat Feed contain elevated levels of copper—an essential mineral for goats, but one that can be toxic to sheep, even at relatively low concentrations.
Goats require a higher intake of copper to support immune function, coat quality, reproduction, and growth. That’s why our goat-specific blends include chelated copper sources such as copper sulfate and copper proteinate, which are more bioavailable and effective for goat metabolism.
These levels are appropriate—and beneficial—for goats, but they can accumulate in a sheep’s liver over time, eventually leading to copper toxicity, a condition that can be fatal.
If you’re managing a mixed-species herd, it’s important to use a feed specifically labeled for sheep, such as our Sheep Feed. This blend delivers balanced nutrition—including vitamins A, D3, and E—with no added copper, making it safe for all stages of sheep life, from gestation to weaning.
We understand that many Southeast farms raise goats and sheep together, and we’re happy to help you develop a feeding strategy that keeps both species healthy without risking overexposure to copper.

How do your blends support reproductive performance and milk production in breeding does and ewes?
Mule City’s goat and sheep feeds are built to support the entire reproductive cycle—from pre-breeding conditions to late pregnancy, lactation, and weaning.
Whether you’re feeding Goat Feed, Maximum Goat Feed, or Sheep Feed, these blends provide the key nutrients needed for healthy conception, fetal development, and strong milk production.
For breeding does and ewes, we focus on:
- High-quality protein: Formulas like Goat Feed and Maximum Goat Feed offer 16% protein from sources like extruded-expelled soybean meal and soybean hulls. These proteins are rich in lysine, methionine, and threonine—amino acids essential for uterine health, placental development, and milk synthesis.
- Energy support: During late gestation and early lactation, does and ewes need more calories to maintain body condition and support offspring growth. We include digestible energy from cracked corn, molasses, and soybean oil, with Maximum Goat Feed providing 7% fat for herds needing extra conditioning or lactation support.
- Chelated trace minerals: Bioavailable forms of copper, zinc, manganese, and selenium help improve fertility, reduce retained placentas, and promote strong immunity in both dam and kid/lamb. These are especially important in areas where Southeastern forage may be deficient.
- Vitamin fortification: All rations are enriched with vitamins A, D3, and E, which are critical for hormone regulation, udder health, and reproductive resilience.
- Yeast cultures and probiotics: These additives support digestion and nutrient absorption, ensuring that pregnant or nursing animals get the most out of every pound of feed—even during heat stress or forage transitions.
Whether you’re preparing first-time fresheners or maintaining a high-production dairy herd, our blends are designed to keep your animals fertile, milking strong, and recovering well after birth.

Can your feeds be used in forage-limited setups, or do they require access to high-quality pasture or hay?
Yes, Mule City’s goat and sheep feeds are designed to perform well even in forage-limited environments—whether you’re short on pasture during summer drought, winter dormancy, or just managing a dry-lot setup.
Our complete feeds—like Goat Feed, Maximum Goat Feed, and Sheep Feed—are formulated with high-fiber, nutrient-dense ingredients that help compensate for gaps in pasture quality or quantity. These include:
- Soybean and cottonseed hulls: Highly digestible fiber sources that support rumen function and help maintain energy levels when hay is stemmy or in short supply.
- Molasses and vegetable oils: These provide dense, palatable energy that keeps goats and sheep eating even during stress or extreme weather.
- Complete vitamin and mineral fortification: Our blends are enriched with essential micronutrients—like calcium, phosphorus, selenium, and vitamin A—to fill the gaps commonly found in Southeastern hay or overgrazed pastures.
- Protein from extruded soybean meal and grain by-products: This helps maintain condition, support growth, and sustain milk production without relying on lush grass or high-quality alfalfa.
While forage should still be available for natural browsing behavior and rumen health, our feeds are nutritionally complete enough to support animals through periods of low forage availability—whether you’re overwintering indoors, rotationally grazing small plots, or rebuilding pasture after heavy rains or drought.
If your animals are relying on bagged feed for a majority of their nutrition, you can trust Mule City to deliver the balance they need—without unnecessary fillers or unpredictable formulas.

Do you offer custom formulations for show animals, pasture-raised herds, or regional mineral deficiencies?
Yes—Mule City Specialty Feeds specializes in custom formulations tailored to the needs of show animals, pasture-based herds, and producers dealing with regional nutrient challenges common in the Southeast.
Whether you’re raising high-performance show goats or lambs, managing a rotational grazing system, or working with hay that’s low in selenium or copper, we can develop a blend that meets your exact goals. Here’s how we help:
- For show animals: Our Show Lamb Feed is already formulated for bloom, growth, and muscle expression. But if you’re working with unique genetics or preparing for a specific show schedule, we can adjust levels of protein, fat, flaxseed, probiotics, or conditioning oils to get the edge in the ring.
- For pasture-based herds: If your goats or sheep are out on low-input forage systems, we can build a fortified supplement to balance mineral gaps and support grazing metabolism without overfeeding calories. Custom blends can complement whatever forage you have—from fescue to coastal Bermuda.
- For regional mineral issues: Many Southeastern soils are low in selenium, copper, and zinc, which can impact fertility, immune response, and hoof health. We offer blends with chelated trace minerals and targeted vitamin support that directly address these gaps. We can also reduce or eliminate copper if you’re raising mixed-species herds or copper-sensitive breeds.
Because everything is blended in-house at our Benson, NC mill, we can offer consistent results with the flexibility to adjust over time—whether you’re improving feed conversion, supporting lactation, or preparing animals for sale or show.
