FAQs

What’s the difference between your standard, First, and Hi-Energy soybean meals?

All of our soybean meal products are made from 100% whole soybeans, but each has a different nutrient profile to serve specific needs:

  • Mule City Soybean Meal and First Soybean Meal both deliver around 45% crude protein and 6.5% fat, making them solid choices for general protein supplementation across livestock species.
  • Hi-Energy Soybean Meal offers 38% protein but a much higher fat content at 18%, which is ideal for animals that need extra energy, such as show animals, breeding stock, or high-performance poultry and swine.

Each product is ground and processed at our Benson, NC mill, giving you the flexibility to choose the right balance of protein and energy for your feeding program.

Just call us at 919-894-3626 or contact us online. We’ll help you decide which soybean meal best fits your operation—whether you need more protein, more energy, or a balance of both.

Are these soybean meals safe for all species, or do I need to feed specific types to specific animals?

All Mule City soybean meal products are safe for use across a wide range of livestock—including cattle, goats, swine, poultry, and horses—when used as part of a properly balanced ration.

However, because soy is naturally high in copper and phosphorus, it’s important to:

  • Avoid high-copper rations for sheep
  • Adjust calcium-phosphorus balance when feeding to horses
  • Pair soybean meal with appropriate grains or forages to prevent nutrient imbalances

If you’re feeding a mixed-species farm or have animals with special needs, we can help you determine the right feeding rates or recommend a custom blend.

Just call us at 919-894-3626 or contact us online. If you’re feeding multiple species or have copper-sensitive animals, we can walk you through safe feeding rates and species-specific recommendations

How do I use soybean meal in a home-mixed ration or supplement program?

Soybean meal is most commonly used to increase crude protein and improve amino acid balance in home-mixed rations. It works especially well when blended with energy-rich grains like corn, barley, or oats.

Here are general inclusion tips:

  • Cattle and goats: 1–2 pounds per head per day as part of a grain mix
  • Swine: Often 20–30% of the total diet for growing pigs
  • Poultry: Key protein source in layer, broiler, and chick starter diets
  • Horses: Use with caution and in small amounts, balanced with forage and minerals

We recommend combining soybean meal with a vitamin-mineral premix or working with us to build a complete custom ration based on your available forage and feed goals.

Just call us at 919-894-3626 or contact us online. We’ll help you build a balanced ration around your forage and grain availability, so your animals get exactly what they need.

Do your soybean meals contain any additives, medications, or GMOs?

We offer both conventional and Non-GMO soybean meal options:

  • First Soybean Meal is Non-GMO verified and contains no medications, growth promoters, or added synthetic ingredients.
  • Hi-Energy and Mule City Soybean Meal are also free from medications, antibiotics, or hormones, and are processed using the Insta-Pro extrusion system to preserve oil content and improve digestibility.

All our meals are single-ingredient products made from whole soybeans with no hidden fillers, so you always know what you’re feeding.

Just call us at 919-894-3626 or contact us online. Ask us about Non-GMO sourcing or additive-free options—we’ll make sure your feed aligns with your program’s values and goals.
